Fibromyalgia Awareness

17 Jul

Imagine this, you wake up one morning feeling totally exhausted having had hardly any sleep at all, you can barely move due to the pain racking through every muscle in your body.  Regular pain killers don’t take away the pain, you have no energy and your concentration level is zero.  You decide to pay a visit to your doctor to find out what the problem is, help is at hand.  Well, yes help is at hand, but it may take months or even years to get your condition diagnosed.   In the meantime you have to live with the symptoms and life changing effects on you and your family every day.

No one knows what causes Fibromyalgia, it has been linked to Rheumatoid Arthritis, trauma, ME and other conditions. This illness cannot be diagnosed through blood tests, and having multiple symptoms, with some similar to other illnesses can delay the diagnosis.   This can cause a lot of unwelcome stress to those who are in constant pain and do not know that is wrong with them.  The not knowing causes all kinds of problems such as thinking that maybe it’s all a figment of your imagination, and because there is no diagnosis, family and friends begin to doubt too, maybe your just lazy?   The psychological effect can be just as devastating as the illness itself, causing depression, lack of confidence and low self-esteem.

There are around two million sufferers of Fibromyalgia in the UK , but, there is still not enough awareness of the illness in this country.  Creating awareness would go a long way to giving a wider understanding of this illness and help Doctors, friends and family recognise the effects this illness has on the sufferer.  More research is needed to find the cause, cure and a faster diagnosis for this illness.  The UK Fibromyalgia are planning an awareness week from the fourth of September till the eleventh September this year. Please do what you can to spread the word about Fibromyalgia.  Posters are available for download at: UK Fibromyalgia
