A day at a time

25 May

23rd May 2011

I woke up Monday morning achy and stiff.  I had a lot to do and I didn’t need the pain that day.  My husband had gone off to hospital for surgery on his shoulder and I needed to be strong to take care of him when he arrived home on Tuesday.   I managed to have breakfast and took the painkillers, but then I had to sit for a while until I had the energy to move again. This is the frustrating part, not having the energy to do what needs to be done.  After about two hours I slowly tackled the household chores and by 12pm all was done.  I lay down on the couch to rest and ended up drifting into a light sleep.  The wind was howling outside, it was gale force.

I rose from the couch at around after about an hours rest and received a text from my husband saying that he thought he would be going into surgery at 1:30pm, I replied to his text to wish him good luck then went to the kitchen to make myself a cup of tea. The kettle boiled the tea was made then wham, the electricity was out!!  Our house is all-electric but we have a coal fire so I set about lighting the fire and then got out the candles in preparation for when darkness fell.  Exhaustion overtook me and I ended up lying down yet again and the pain begun travelling from my feet to my head, it felt like every muscle in my body was being kneaded, they felt heavy.   The mobile network had gone down too, so there was no way to contact anyone, so with my faithful pal Wallace the springer spaniel, I curled up beside me there was nothing left to do but sleep.

I rose from the couch around 5pm and put more coal on the fire and it was time to take Wallace for his walk to the park which thankfully is only a short distance away.  I took my stick with me as walking was extremely painful.  After 15 minutes in the park we got home and I flopped into the chair where I remained for a good hour.  Time for more painkillers, then I had to think about preparing something to eat.  I decided to have some tomato soup and I cooked it on the fire, it didn’t take long before I was sitting enjoying it.   I enjoyed the experience of cooking on the open fire, everything cooked very quickly and was ready in no time at all.

It was a cosy evening, but I ached everywhere and I got ready for bed, but decided to sleep on the couch for the night, no energy to climb the stairs.  I must have woke up every hour of the night.  I watched the dawn break and heard the birds begin their early morning chorus, my limbs felt very heavy as I rose to start a new day.

That was my Monday maybe Tuesday will be a good day 🙂
